THE COTTAGE

Upstream Cottage is sensitively built in timber with the critically endangered Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos ecosystem in mind and to have as little an impact on the receiving environment as possible. The interiors focus on natural simplicity with a light and fresh finish and a relaxing colour palette which blends seamlessly into the landscape. Amenities and decor elements have been consciously curated for their environmental ethics, as well as supporting local NGOs, design, art and craft.

LIVING

This cosy cottage has a bathroom with a shower and a separate toilet. Linen and towels are provided. The kitchen is well-equipped with all the basic necessities making for a convenient and comfortable stay. This includes an electric fridge-freezer and gas stove with oven.

The open-plan living area opens up onto an outdoor dining deck with large glass windows and sliding doors offering views of nature, inside and out. This cottage is completely off-grid being powered by the sun and water heated by gas. The water comes from a mountain spring on the farm and is naturally coloured by the geology and fynbos vegetation. For those cold and rainy days, there is a wood-burning fireplace in the lounge to keep you warm and cosy. (A complimentary bundle of seasoned firewood is provided.)

Nestled on the banks of the Palmiet River and neighbouring the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, Downstream Cottage at The River Retreat is perfectly poised for botanical exploration, hiking, mountain biking and swimming in the river…

GOOD TO KNOW

There is no reception or Wifi at the cottages.

Fire poses a serious threat to the fynbos so unfortunately no braais or outdoor fires are permitted.

The solar system is limited and is designed to only power the fridge-freezer, lights and plugs to charge phones and laptops.

Regrettably no pets allowed.

Exceptions can be made for families with three children where a stretcher with a mattress will be supplied.

Approximately 90 m from the Palmiet River.

Well maintained roads allow easy access to the cottage.

If cancelling 7 days before arrival, forfeit 100% of the booking total.

If cancelling 14 days before arrival, forfeit 50% of the deposit.
