THE COTTAGE 

The Forge is a truly special cottage, tucked away in the East corner of the Oakhurst Farm giving guests uninterrupted views of the beautiful indigenous forest. Guests staying at the Forge have direct access onto a 6km forest trail through a gate leading off the driveway.

LIVING 

The Forge boasts a living space which wraps around the cottage and is open plan, flowing gracefully into a well-equipped kitchen. A covered deck offers soothing views onto open fields and forests. The Forge has a braai area, plunge pool, wood fired hot tub and outdoor hot shower. Firewood, percale linen, bath towels, soaps, and uncapped WiFi are included.

THE AREA

The Forge is situated on Oakhurst Farm, located along the well-know Seven Passes Road, which runs inland between George and Knysna. Oakhurst Farm is one of the few remaining, large working dairy farms along the Garden Route. Covering some 640 hectares, 200 of which are pristine fynbos and indigenous forest, the farm is today run commercially by the Crowther family, sixth generation descendants of the original purchaser, Henry Dumbleton.

There is no shortage of healthy outdoor fun to keep you and your kids busy. From many kilometres of well-maintained forest single track for mountain biking or trail running, to hikes through the forest to the farm’s waterfall, the action at Oakhurst just keeps getting better.

Kids of all ages are welcome. A cot and high chair can be provided on request.

Tea, coffee, sugar and milk pods are provided. 

Fire starter pack including 10 pieces of wood. Additional wood can be purchased ar R40 per bag.

The key will be in the door so self-check in is available. You are welcome to stop at the reception desk beforehand to check-in and browse the charming farm shop. If you arrive after 5pm, you can drive straight to the Forge.

To get to the parking space in front of the Forge, your car needs to go down a sharp and steep U bend. It can be slippery and muddy after heavy rains. Due to low hanging branches over the road, please do not drive down the road with bikes stored on top of your car. There is another parking space a bit further up the road if the driveway is too muddy. You can then access the Forge by walking through a fairytale like walkway on foot.

The Forge is adjacent to the owner's main house. They have 7 friendly free-range dogs who like to wander down to the Forge to greet new guests. The smallest rescue dogs like to guard their home by barking at guests walking by but are harmless.

There are about 30 chickens on the farm who live in a coop in between The Forge and our main house. Fresh free-range eggs from the chickens are collected daily and can be bought in the farm shop. The chickens wake up at sunrise and you may hear them on your first night especially if you are not used to the sound.

OUR RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCES

Farm activities can be booked directly with Oakhurst Farm. This includes horse outrides, archery and a dairy tour with Farmer Jake. You can rent mountain bikes and fishing rods from reception. Please enquire about the meal & picnic baskets (24 hour notice required). Guided hiking and canoeing tours with a local guide to the beautiful Half Collared Kingfisher Waterfall can also be arranged - tours based on availability.

BOOKING TERMS 

50% deposit required to confirm your booking.

The balance of the booking amount must paid in full to Oakhurst, at the latest, one month before arrival. In the event of a booking made within one month before arrival the entire booking amount must be paid immediately.

Cancellation policy

More than one month: 50% Cancellation fee (50% deposit is non-refundable)

Less than one month to arrival: 100% Cancellation fee (Full amount is due and non-refundable)

No refund will be made for bookings made over peak periods i.e long weekends and holidays
