THE CAMP
This suite is named for the beautiful Marula sitting proudly in the deck between the plunge pool and the fire pit. But apart from its marula tree and luxuriant garden, this suite is surrounded by incredible rock features with soft green overtones – emulated in the tent’s soft furnishings – and incredible sunsets. Luxuriate in peaceful hours by the circular pool enjoying the expanse of bush in front of you as you drink it all in.
Archaeological evidence shows that marulas have been a source of nutrition for as long as 12,000 years. They are dioecious, which means they have a specific gender – only the female trees bear the juicy, aromatic fruit. This is rich in minerals and vitamin C and can also be cooked to produce jam, juices and alcoholic beverages. Inside the flesh are one or two very small, tasty nuts which are rich in protein. Various species of wildlife eat the fruit and leaves of the tree, especially Bushveld Bivouac’s two resident eland, Brutus and Cleopatra, who you may find nibbling in your garden on any given night! Traditional medicinal uses of marula also include the use of the leaves for relief of heartburn. The bark contains antihistamines and is also used for the treatment of dysentery, diarrhoea and as a malaria prophylactic. The wood is soft and used for carving and the inner bark can be used to make rope.
SLEEPING
King-sized bed (can be converted into two singles on request)
Two additional camper beds for children under 14 if required.
LIVING
This tent is furnished with a king-size bed made up of glorious pure cotton linen, a ceiling fan, dressing area and gorgeous custom-made gowns, bathroom and swimming towels are provided. The beautiful bathroom features a large Italian shower, toilet positioned to benefit from the stunning views and a sliding door for privacy.
The separate tented kitchen is fully equipped with a two-plate stove, full-size fridge and all utensils, crockery and cutlery. The sleeping and kitchen tent each have sides that can roll up with insect gauze remaining, so one can be in the bush without the restriction of ‘walls’.
Even though this camp is self-catering, at an additional cost, food shopping can be done on your behalf and delicious pre-prepared meals can be ordered, as well as a mouth-watering picnic basket for a day excursion.
Relax around your private fire pit or cool down in the inviting swimming pool and enjoy the views.
THE AREA
Located halfway between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa, the farm lies just 40 minutes from the world famous Kruger Park’s Phalaborwa gate to the north, a bit over an hour’s drive from Orpen Gate to the south; and close to numerous other extraordinary destinations.
While you’re on our farm, however, it’s all about walking, mountain biking, or simply soaking up the incredible views from each site’s decks, surrounded by pristine bush and incredible birdlife — with the odd curious antelope venturing past.
GOOD TO KNOW
One of four units at the camp. Bookable individually or as a group. 100 meters apart, within walking distance and there are pathways in-between each unit.
Children under 14 (no more than 2) can be accommodated on cute camp beds in their parents’ tents for a small additional charge of R245 per child per night.
All linen and swimming towels are included.
The farm, Bushveld Bivouac, is approximately 30 kms from Hoedspruit and 45 km from Phalaborwa where there is excellent shopping (as long as it isn’t designer clothing you’re after) and there is a garage across the road with a good range of alcohol and basic groceries.
The farm is home to plains game, i.e. no big predators. There is however an elusive leopard that frequents the farm, as well as some hyena and wild dog that pass through.
Coffee station with complimentary filter and instant coffee, an assortment of teas, sugar, creamer and rusks.
Small range of pre-cooked meals and baskets are available to order.
Solar electricity (please no hairdryers, hair straighteners, shavers or power tools!).
Serviced daily.
Game drives and guided bush walks can be arranged at an additional cost. Wildlife on the property include giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, impala, warthog, eland, bushbuck, waterbuck, duiker, and a variety of birdlife. We sometimes spot genets and civets.
